It is the time of year that many children are getting ready to celebrate their First Communion. When you prepare for a child s First Communion, there are many things to think about. But the most important thing to remember when preparing for this special day is that you are creating a memory for the child who has earned it. Have a good time and allow his or her input. Before the child can receive communion, they will have to go to confession. Here, they will disclose their sins and be given a penance. Once that is done, they are ready to receive the blessing of communion.
It is very important that friends and family of the child show their support for his or her religious instruction and religious life. Tell the child how proud you are of him. Ask your relatives to attend the ceremony.
If you have a daughter, she has probably imagined the beautiful white dress she will be able to wear to the ceremony. The girls communion dresses come with beading, lace and sequins. The length of the dress should be at least to the knee. Currently, the most popular length is tea length. This is not an occasion for a dress with spaghetti straps. Some churches do not allow bare arms. Be sure to check with your church or CCD instructor for specific guidelines you will need to follow. Whatever the requirements, be sure your daughter is very much involved in choosing the dress. This is her day. Let her shine.
Boys will usually be required to wear a suit. They are not often as passionate as the girls are about the choices, but they may want to have some input. Some churches will allow slacks, a dress shirt and a tie. Again, check with your specific church for guidelines.
The Holy First Communion is definitely an occasion to celebrate. You can have a get together at home or have a fancy gathering at a rented facility. Some churches have a gathering on the premises for those who are celebrating. That may be another option. Whatever you decide, have a good time. Your child is experiencing a very important milestone in his or her religious life. You want to send a message that religion is very important to your family.
Enjoy yourself and make your child feel special. They have worked hard for this day. Remember, you are creating a memory. Make it a positive one.
